Although “Moana” led the box office on Friday, the live-action remake didn’t make the domestic splash Disney was probably hoping for.

“Moana” made just $18 million on Friday from 3,875 North American theaters. Rival estimates have it grossing $45 million through opening weekend, which is below the $56 million the original “Moana” earned over its debut in 2016. Disney shelled out $250 million for the live-action reprise, up from the $175 million spent on its animated older sibling, meaning “Moana” needs to stick around in theaters for a while to justify costs.

The numbers say it all: 2,336 accredited participants and 271 industry activities and 882 one-on-one business meetings connecting selected projects with a host of international guests, advisors and potential partners.

Barbara Ling, the production designer who turned back time and won an Oscar for re-creating 1969 Los Angeles for Quentin Tarantino’s acclaimed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, has died. She was 73.

Ling died Thursday in Santa Barbara after a battle with cancer, a spokesperson for WME announced.

A Los Angeles native, Ling also tooled around her hometown for the present-day, Michael Douglas-starring Falling Down (1993), then reteamed with director Joel Schumacher to set up the fictional Gotham City for Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997).

Mathieu Kassovitz’s landmark 1995 film “La Haine” is heading to television in a new form, with French broadcaster France Télévisions set to air the stage adaptation “La Haine, sur scène – Jusqu’ici rien n’a changé” as part of its 2026-2027 slate.

The adaptation was among the titles unveiled in Paris during France Télévisions’ annual press conference presenting its upcoming programming, which spans French fiction, live performance, international drama and a robust current-affairs and political lineup in the run-up to France’s 2027 presidential election.
