The Ford Bronco Sport, the Big Broco’s Little Brother, Is a Tamer Breed of Horse

MSRP
- Rugged appearance, legit off-road chops when properly equipped, quick with the larger engine.
- Ride is firm on broken pavement, base three-cylinder is weak in the knees, tight on second-row kneeroom.
- Born with the weight of the Bronco name on its back, the Bronco Sport has enough skills to avoid tarnishing it.

By Andrew WendlerOverview
Born to leverage the Bronco name in the compact SUV space, the Bronco Sport successfully adopts the styling direction—and some of the attitude—of its larger sibling. Two powertrains are available: the base 180-hp turbo 1.5-liter three-cylinder and a 250-hp turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Both have an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as standard equipment.
Fuel efficiency is in the sweet spot for the segment, and the Bronco Sport can tow 2700 pounds when properly equipped. While the lower trims do a good job of delivering the “five-passenger and a cargo hold” attributes that make the compact SUV segment so popular, it’s the Badlands Edition with the larger engine and Sasquatch Package's off-road equipment that make a case for the Sport being worthy of the storied Bronco name.
Expert Tip: While Ford currently doesn't offer a Bronco Sport hybrid, Honda does offer a CR-V hybrid, but even in TrailSport spec it lacks the Bronco Sport's rugged persona.

What's New for 2027?
Three new exterior colors, Glacier Gray Tri-Coat, Gladwin Green, and Neptune Blue, arrive to replace the departed Azure Gray Tri-Coat, Carbonized Gray, and Space White finishes. Big Bend trims get new cloth upholstery and standard 17-inch steel wheels, but auto start-stop is no longer a standard feature. The rear under-seat storage on the Badlands has been removed.

Pricing and Which One to Buy
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
- Engines: 180-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder, 250-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Drivetrain: all-wheel drive
The Bronco Sport rides on a platform borrowed from the compact Escape crossover, and every model has all-wheel drive. A 180-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder is the base engine, but we much prefer the 250-hp turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Both engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission, with the more powerful engine getting steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
The Sasquatch package on the top-tier Badlands trim makes for the most rugged off-roader in the lineup, and includes a torque-vectoring rear differential, a one-pedal off-road driving mode, and a 360-degree-view camera; the penultimate Outer Banks offers a Sasquatch package of its own, which is missing just a couple of items. Even the base Big Bend model can be beefed up with additional off-road equipment in the form of the Black Diamond package, which adds skid plates, a front brush guard, and all-terrain tires.
We drove a 2025 Bronco Sport Badlands Sasquatch, both on- and off-road, and found it to be a capable trail runner. Its knobby tires make the highway ride a bit louder than the standard model, but it's otherwise just as nimble as other Bronco Sports. The 2.0-liter engine makes the Badlands quick, while the base 1.5-liter engine in the lower trims is a bit breathless at higher speeds.
0–60-MPH Times
- C/D 60-mph Test: 8.2 seconds (Outer Banks, 1.5-liter), 5.9 seconds (Badlands, 2.0-liter)
In Comparison: The last non-hybrid Honda CR-V we tested required 8.1 seconds to hit 60 mph; Volkswagen SEL R-Line Turbo did much better, achieving a 6.7-second run.
Towing and Payload Capacity
- Max Towing: 2700 pounds
The Bronco Sport can tow up to 2700 pounds; however, that max capacity is for models with the 2.0-liter turbo four. With the standard three-cylinder powertrain, the compact SUV is rated to pull 2200 pounds.
In Comparison: The Volkswagen Tiguan is rated to tow up to 1700 pounds with all-wheel drive, while the Honda CR-V is rated for 1500 pounds.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
- C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Test: 33 mpg (1.5-liter)
- EPA City Ratings: 21–25 mpg
- EPA Highway Ratings: 27–30 mpg
The three-cylinder Bronco Sport is rated at 25 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg combined. Stepping up to the more powerful four-cylinder version drops those figures to 21 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined.
We ran a Bronco Sport with the smaller engine on our 75-mph fuel-economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, and it returned an impressive 33 mpg highway. For more information about the Bronco Sport's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
In Comparison: In the same test, the Volkswagen Tiguan turbo returned 31 mpg while the non-turbo version was incrementally more efficient with the 32-mpg return.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
First Row: The Bronco Sport's tallish roofline allows for an upright seating position, which helps drivers see over the flat hood. But the seat cushion feels oddly convex, with support that falls away toward the edges. The cabin materials are a mix of cheap plastics and soft-touch surfaces, but there are thoughtful stowage features. The Badlands model comes with washable, rubberized flooring and upholstery that is easy to clean.
Second Row: The baby Bronco's rear seats are high enough off the floor to afford comfortable seating. Knee room, however, is in shorter supply, which might make accommodating rear-facing child seats a challenge.
Cargo Capacity: With the rear seats folded, there's enough cargo volume to fit two mountain bikes inside. The cargo hold can also be outfitted with a slide-out table that doubles as a workspace, a 400-watt power inverter, and LED lights built into the inside of the rear gate to provide overhead lighting. The rear liftgate glass opens separately, and front-fender tie-downs can secure a roof-mounted kayak. In our testing, we fit 11 carry-on suitcases inside the Bronco Sport's cargo bay; with the rear seats folded, we fit a total of 22.
Infotainment and Connectivity
- Infotainment: 13.2-inch touchscreen
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Audio System: 6-speaker stereo (standard), 10-speaker B&O stereo (optional)
Every Bronco Sport features a 13.2-inch touchscreen with sharp resolution, particularly for the backup camera; a 12.3-inch digital gauge display is also standard. Most climate controls are within the touchscreen, a less-than-ideal setup. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, in-dash navigation, and SiriusXM satellite radio are supported. A six-speaker stereo is standard, but a 10-speaker B&O sound system is an option on the Outer Banks and Badlands models.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The Bronco Sport comes with a host of driver-assistance technology that includes standard forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. A more advanced adaptive cruise system with lane-centering called Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 is available as an option.
- Standard Safety Features: automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist
- Optional Safety Features: adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature
For information about the Bronco Sport's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Ford provides a competitive limited and powertrain warranty that aligns with most of its rivals. However, it lacks the complementary maintenance that some competitors provide.
- Limited Warranty: three years or 36,000 miles
- Powertrain Warranty: five years or 60,000 miles
- Complimentary Maintenance: none
