When a construction firm can monitor a single tree from a laptop screen, streamline marine species identification and verify its environmental performance using satellite data, an improved form of accountability begins to emerge.

In the heart of Penang, Malaysia, a team of engineers faced a laborious task: monitoring more than 3,000 trees including heritage trees, roadside plantings and mature canopy, along a 27-kilometer railway alignment. “We simply couldn’t send arborists and engineers on long site walks every month. It’s labor-intensive and inefficient,” states Ong Jee Lian, Gamuda’s Group Chief Communications and ESG Officer.
After a rigorous, months-long evaluation of various tools and operational approaches, Gamuda introduced a digital monitoring system that allowed trees to be tracked remotely via phone or laptop. The underlying technology and expertise were shared with regulators and local councils to showcase a highly efficient method for tree monitoring, prompting neighboring authorities to express interest in adopting the system for their own sections.
Traditionally, environmental monitoring in construction relies on site visits, sampling and manual reporting. These processes can take weeks or months to translate into actionable data. By the time insights emerge, risks may already have materialized. The limitation is not a lack of intent but the inability to obtain timely and verifiable environmental data at scale.
For Gamuda, the lesson was clear: sustainability could not remain a box-ticking, retrospective exercise. It had to be continuous, supported by real-time geospatial and environmental monitoring technologies. “Without digital tools, it’s hard to obtain real-time updates, traceability and a reliable audit trail,” says Ong.
The Cost Of Not Knowing
As recently as 2020, while Malaysia’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting framework was still in its formative stages, Gamuda had started aligning with the stringent expectations of investors in the U.S., U.K., Australia and Singapore. When the team began working through the Dow Jones Sustainability Index assessment questionnaire, they encountered questions that their systems could not provide answers for.
The gap revealed structural roadblocks. ESG frameworks assumed the existence of real-time, operational data that most companies could not consistently measure or verify on the ground. “Reporting is just record-keeping, not progress,” Ong notes. “If you’re not measuring what’s happening on the ground, there’s nothing meaningful to report.”
Without reliable, verifiable data, sustainability efforts could neither be defended nor meaningfully improved, only described after the fact. As expectations rose among regulators, financiers and global partners, one conclusion became obvious. Gamuda needed data it did not have. So it built SIGMA.

SIGMA: Turning Environmental Data Into Decisions
SIGMA centralizes environmental monitoring, reporting and analysis into a single platform. And since the challenges extended beyond Gamuda’s own operations, the platform was built not only for Gamuda but also for its supply chain and external stakeholders. Two capabilities define its approach: satellite-based geospatial monitoring and environmental DNA (eDNA).
The first uses satellite imaging integrated with geographic information systems to replace periodic inspections with continuous environmental monitoring. In remote and fast-changing corridors, it also enables near-real-time detection of environmental disturbance that would otherwise go unrecorded. In the densely forested interior of Perak and Sabah, Malaysia, geospatial surveillance integrated with Google Earth Engine delivers boundary clarity with a precision that manual surveys simply cannot match.
Gamuda’s collaboration with Google demonstrates how digital innovation can help tackle some of the most complex sustainability challenges. “What stood out was Gamuda’s willingness to think beyond conventional approaches and collaboratively explore new possibilities,” says Hana Raja, Country Manager, Google Cloud Malaysia . “This collaborative journey reflects how technology can empower organizations to take a more proactive and forward-looking approach to sustainability risk management.”
The second, eDNA, analyzes genetic traces in water or soil to detect biodiversity without physical trapping. Compared with traditional surveys, it is 30% to 50% faster and more cost-efficient while also revealing species often missed by conventional methods.
Efficient sampling—adaptable for rivers, lakes and seas—enables extended feasibility studies for precise ecosystem protection and on-ground mitigation.

In one project, the findings shaped the design of wildlife crossings after previously unrecorded species were detected. What is especially transformative is that the technology allows teams to move beyond periodic ecological snapshots toward continuous environmental visibility across a project’s lifecycle.
Together these tools shift environmental data from static reporting to dynamic visibility. “With SIGMA, using satellite imagery and environmental DNA, we can ground decisions in verifiable evidence,” Ong says.
The platform also broadens environmental monitoring beyond conventional impact assessments. It integrates assessments based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, along with tree monitoring, landscape analysis and eDNA, to support more targeted conservation planning throughout project development.
In one instance, eDNA findings revealed a more diverse habitat near a project site, prompting improvement to ecosystem design and construction methods while also highlighting potential ecotourism benefits.
Accountability At Scale
Across the construction sector, much of the supply chain, particularly SMEs, lacks the tools, expertise and systems to integrate ESG into their operations. Without a scalable way to bring these partners along, sustainability progress risks being constrained by uneven capability across the value chain.
Crucially, the system extends into Gamuda’s wider supply chain, where SMEs account for more than 90% of Malaysian businesses. To help these businesses meet evolving reporting and performance requirements, Gamuda has embedded ESG requirements into its contracts and extended free access to its digital sustainability platform, enabling ESG-related data to be captured, standardized and verified in a structured, auditable form.
“By digitizing ESG efforts, we aim to help traditional construction move forward,” says Ong. “The platform delivers gains in time, accuracy and efficiency while also upskilling the workforce and building new capabilities among SMEs.”
Digital tools, however, are only one part of the equation. Dedicated teams, including Gamuda Parks and sustainability specialists, oversee biodiversity management and long-term conservation planning across the group. Together, these people, processes and technologies underpin Gamuda’s commitment to verifiable data.
For six consecutive years, Gamuda’s climate disclosures have undergone independent, rigorous assurance aligned with internationally recognized frameworks including the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD).
This commitment has also received external recognition. Gamuda is the only construction company selected as a pilot participant in the “A LEAP for Nature” initiative led by Bank Negara Malaysia, the World Bank Group and the United Nations Development Programme’s Biodiversity Finance Initiative (UNDP BIOFIN).

Gamuda is also the only Malaysian company in its sector with targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), reinforcing the robustness of its emissions data and methodology. That rigor has helped earn it a Morgan Stanley Capital International AA rating and the Minority Shareholders Watch Group Industry Excellence Award.
“When billions are poured into an infrastructure project, demonstrable risk management adds enormous value for the client and for the banks,” Ong explains.
As ESG expectations tighten, accountability is no longer defined by narrative but by data. Trees tracked remotely. Species read from water. The difference is no longer just what can be observed—but what can be verified.
