Sam Barlow, famous for his work as the lead designer and writer on Silent Hill games Origins and Shattered Memories (alongside his subsequent indie projects such as Her Story, Telling Lies, and Immortality), has revealed the name of his previously announced game, known as "Project C": Precognition, a live-action sci-fi horror game.

"Precognition follows in the footsteps of Immortality, combining cinematic FMV sequences with non-linear storytelling and a focus on player freedom and agency," reads a news release. "Players take on the role of Diana, a woman who discovers she can receive visions of the future after an experimental implant is embedded into her brain."

Movie director Brandon Cronenberg, known for Infinity Pool starring Alexander Skarsgård and Mia Goth, is also on the project. “The films I make tend to be subjective and experiential, with the horror emerging as one person’s perspective of the world warps around them,” said Brandon Cronenberg via the press release. “The games that Sam and the team have made over the years are subjective experiences by their very nature - no two people will have the same experience with them. So it’s the perfect place to explore these themes further”.

Barlow explained that the team at Half Mermaid Productions has been "trying to test the limits of non-linear storytelling, focusing on how the game feels to play, while encouraging player agency and freedom." Precognition introduces a world of "cause-and-effect, with a story that spins out as a consequence of your choices. We wanted it to be a very authentic sci-fi horror experience."

Precognition has also joined publisher Kinetic Publishing, a company launched earlier this year by Phasmophobia developer Kinetic Games. Four other games, alongside Precognition, have also been announced on Aug. 12. Here's the full lineup, as per Kinetic Games:

  • Contact Protocol (Spring 2027)
    • "Contact Protocol is a starship job simulator taking place in a gritty, cassette-future. Humanity has spread throughout the solar system and started extracting its natural resources."
  • Crescent County (Summer 2027)
    • "Crash headfirst into this witch-tech open world, drifting and driving on the back of your new motorbroom. Make deliveries, trick out your broom, and race your new friends (and crushes) as the sun sets. Get into gossip, sort your life out, and discover what it means to find home."
  • Precognition (Spring 2028)
    • "After receiving an experimental implant, Diana gains the ability to see her own future. Use her precognition to navigate kaleidoscopic possibilities and change the world for the better… or for the worse. Precognition is the new sci-fi horror game from Sam Barlow and Brandon Cronenberg."
  • Shellbound (Summer 2028)
    • "Shellbound is a Post-Metroidvania on a gigantic snail. You’re a parasite, exploring a (literally) living world, fighting and controlling enemies for platforming, puzzles and combat and evolving its ecosystem like Darwin on steroids – all while unraveling your role in the giant creature’s life cycle."
  • Aether Wizard Life (Autumn 2028)
    • "Aether Wizard Life is a cozy adventure where you apprentice as a young wizard in a haunted town filled with magic, mystery, and romance. A love letter to Studio Ghibli and classic 2D hand-drawn games."

Kinetic Publishing's aim is "to give indie developers the support they need to make great games, without taking away creative control." This first slate of games looks exciting and original, with Precognition leading the charge thanks to the experience of its creators.
