Los Angeles Rams are spiralling, Sean McVay looks lost and Aaron Donald is being let down

The Los Angeles Rams are edging towards must-win territory as they look to revive their season against the Las Vegas Raiders this Sunday, according to Sky Sports NFL’s Phoebe Schecter.

Sean McVay's injury-stricken side enter 2-4 and bottom of the NFC West having so far fallen desperately short of soaring expectations for a team billed as Super Bowl favourites coming into the year.

Myles Garrett remains sidelined, Matthew Stafford just lost a red-hot Davante Adams to injury and their league-worst special teams unit remain a debilitating hindrance.

Three-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald didn't come back for this.

"I feel a bit tight on Aaron Donald because he ultimately came out of retirement to play with Myles Garrett, Kobie Turner, Ponna Ford, and none of them are playing. It's just Aaron Donald," said Schecter on Inside the Huddle.

In this episode of the Inside The Huddle podcast, Neil Reynolds and Jeff Reinebold discuss the LA Rams' poor start to the NFL season.

"It feels like they need to find a way to salvage their season. But I just think it's so much more than just stats," Schecter added.

"When you're looking at this team and you're looking at the injuries that they have, losing Davante Adams, nobody wants to see that. He is your red zone guy, he is someone who gives so much confidence, you just throw it up down there and he'll find a way.

"You're starting to slowly chip away at all these receivers. I've never seen Sean McVay just look so lost or, you know, almost like hurt by the whole situation.

"It's a huge challenge for the Rams. I don't know how they find a way to salvage themselves."

Highlights of the Buffalo Bills against the Los Angeles Rams from Week 5 of the NFL season.

McVay's Rams are still averaging the third most yards on offense in the NFL while ranking in passing yards, but sit down in 15th in rushing. Reigning MVP Matthew Stafford meanwhile tops the league in passing yards with 1,794 through six weeks, and has thrown 11 touchdowns to six interceptions, albeit while being 15th in EPA/play (an advanced metric measuring down-to-down efficiency).

Having been missing Puka Nacua earlier in the season, they are now without Adams having entered with hopes of the pair featuring prominently alongside one another. Injuries at the tight end position have meanwhile hindered McVay's multiple tight end sets, which proved so successful last season .

"You look at who this Rams team is, they're starting to be quite predictable," said Schecter. "They've called a pass play on 65 percent of offensive plays, that's really quite skewed, and you need to have that run game going.

"I think that's part of it, too. You're starting to see the athletes from within, Kyren Williams coming out being like, I don't know why I'm not running the ball. I don't know why I'm not playing as much. And that's never what you want.

"We talk about it so much with other teams, like the Eagles, for example. And it becomes a really big deal. The Rams are in trouble right now. And if they're supposed to be this Super Bowl team, they've got to find a way to pull together soon."

The Rams are coming off an 18-16 upset defeat to the Arizona Cardinals, having fallen to the Buffalo Bills in overtime the previous week. Their special-teams woes have reared their ugly head once again, with Harrison Mevis released following his role in the loss to Buffalo, only for his replacement, Blake Grupe, to suffer a season-ending ACL injury while attempting to make a tackle on a return against Arizona last weekend.

Awaiting them is a Raiders team sitting 3-3 and seemingly exceeding early expectations behind Kirk Cousins during Klint Kubiak's first season as head coach.

"It feels it feels like it's spiralling down the drainpipe at the moment," said Sky Sports NFL's Neil Reynolds.

"McVay is somebody to monitor because he's very frustrated, probably frustrated that when he didn't have Puka Nacua, he had Davante Adams. Now he's got Nacua back and out goes Adams.

"They're beating themselves. I think some of Sean McVay's play, he seems to regret after every game, he seems to regret something he did.

"Now here comes Kirk Cousins, who's playing very well for the Raiders. And it's in Las Vegas. This is a big challenge for the Rams."
