Common Sense Media, a nonprofit that provides age-based ratings and reviews of media and tech for families, has labeled ChatGPT for Teens an “unacceptable risk.”

The rating comes as chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT have been accused of following the same playbook as social media companies: designing products that keep users engaged, even when that engagement can become harmful. In chatbots, engagement is often won by behaviors like sycophancy and sometimes leads to catastrophic consequences.

On Tuesday, a North Carolina man was sentenced to 18 months in prison in the first federal case connected to music streaming fraud. Mike Smith, who pleaded guilty, was accused of making millions in royalties off a scheme that involved using bots to artificially inflate plays of his songs. An aspiring musician himself, Smith had a catalog of his own music, but he was also accused of deploying these bots on hundreds of thousands of songs created with artificial intelligence — or rather, if you’re a loyal member of Donald Trump’s Department of Justice, “super intelligence.”

Today, when a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Mode a question, they rarely see a list of suggested links. They see one synthesized answer that cites a handful of sources. If your brand is one of those citations, you win attention, traffic, and trust. If it isn’t, you’re invisible, even when you rank on page one.
